I have also noticed the touchscreen desktop services decides to disable itself whenever it feels like it, I have to manually enable and start, the USB I get yellow errors I have to uninstall then reboot to get them working, Microsoft you need to look into the issues people are telling you instead of it's our drivers etc etc, get a grip. After a windows update, many computer maybe all of them, have started to not working and Microsoft's answer is that your device can be defective or reinstall device driver from troubleshooting. Although there are a ton of these, they all use one of two chips: Prolific or FTDI. I've found the prolific ones to be generaly unreliable and extremely picky about drivers - specific version for specific OS/SP levles etc and in general a real PITA. FTDI adapters OTOH, appears to be very stable and offers more options in their driver and that is what I use. Short of the manufacturer telling you which chip it uses, a quick way to tell the difference is the FTDI adapters generally have activiy LEDs but the Prolific adapters don't. As suggested in the post, we have tried with no avail to get a USB to Serial adapter to work since Windows 10 1703 update. We bought the FTDI adapter as suggested, updated the driver for the prolific as suggested, tried to switch to Microsoft USB to Serial, only to blue screen the machine. We put a serial port sniffer on the machine and can see the data getting transmitted to the device, an Epson TM-U375 serial printer that we use all over the place.
