Slog2 709 Lut

Posted on -

Since the A7S gamma in Slog2 isn't full range, using the included Slog2+SGamut to Slog2+Rec709 3D LUT is a good starting point. Once converted to Rec709 color with the Slog2 curve, a custom curve can be used in Resolve, then the final look saved as a 3D LUT which can then be loaded into Premiere Pro (real-time effect). As long as you know how to apply a LUT, you are good to go. Check out all the LUTs included in this package. Hollywood level color grading WITHOUT spending years trying to master grading.

Right now I'd like a good video look, not a film look, with a LUT that gets close enough to minimize color editing. And something that gives good editing control at the top and bottom ends. So far I get the best results with Alister Chapman's basic AC_A7S_709_.cube or his AC_A7S_709800.cube. I've tried James Miller's 'Hyde Park' and his other Sony LUTs but they seem too dark and washed out for me. Has anyone found something else they really like and recommend?

Regularly I update this pack with new looks (free updates, you'll receive an email with download link).

Excellent work man. However, if I can’t control luminance and hue etc, it is going to be useless for me. Any tips for using your LUT with Premiere Pro 2015 would be awesome.

These are pretty nice too, and have versions for various levels of exposure. These might be helpful as Slog2+SGamut changes color behavior with exposure (fixed in Slog3+SGamut3). In my tests so far, the F65 LUT from Sony for Slog2+SGamut to Slog2+Rec709 appears to be working OK for skin tones. Using Resolve 11 with the above LUTs it's possible to get some pretty impressive looking color and skin tones with SLog2 and SGamut.

The goal of course is to save myself a lot of time in the editing room/color suite, and get each shot that much closer to the final look right off the bat. The new LUT that I created was based off of a hybrid of Sony’s SLog 3 LUT and the Arri Alexa LUT, the former of which works surprisingly well with SLog 3 footage. From there, I brought down the mids a touch, made a slight contrast adjustment, and warmed up the midtones slightly.

Can you recommend any good tutorials for it?

WHICH IS WHICH: V-LOG-L / S-LOG-2? Answer: Left is A7s SLog2 & Right is GH4 V-Log-L. Here's test number 1 of a few coming up. A rather quick 'vanilla' test done in the back garden of my 83 year-old father - both cameras using similarly matched lenses, shutter and aperture was adjusted to keep in accordance to the default recommended LOG ISO as given by each camera. Exposure was bang on 0 for each. Nothing else I will give away about the above.just yet!

Film-Like1 = An extended range gamma with highlight roll off (+400% range), slightly de-saturated, slightly more film like color (small red/yellow removed). Filmic2 = Extended range low contrast gamma with very good over exposure handling.

However, if I use your LUT as an Input LUT in the basic corrections panel, this is not a problem. The only problem with doing that is there is no way to control the gain of the LUT, it seems stuck at 100% unless there is a way to work around this. I really like the A7S_709800_1over and 2over LUT because they give me a super accurate color space to begin grading from.

On A7s S-LOG files forget about LUT's and learn how to use Davinci Resolve. LUT's are OK for a quick way to preview footage but they are generally too crude with 8bit S-LOG footage and or are designed to give you a 'hipster' look. Resolve is quite simply the best grading tool out there for A7s footage as amongst other things it lets you adjust tones just in the luminance ( Y) channel without it effecting the colours which greatly helps in achieving natural looking grades and good skin tones. Even the latest Luminetri colour control in Premier Pro doesn't grade A7s footage very well although you may find that PP is a better editing software but you can 'round trip' between PP and resolve quite easily. I use PP to edit and Resolve to grade. If you must use LUT's check out 'Casey Wilson'. Charles Hull wrote: I'm looking for the best LUTs for the A7RII Slog2 profile.
